Discover…. Tudor history brought to life (there’s a sandpit and games too!)

Once a fine Tudor Manor, the Turret House and grounds at Sheffield Manor Lodge are now a great place for families and those with an interest in heritage to explore. The  house was the home of George Talbot, 6th Earl of Shrewsbury and his wife Bess of Hardwick. Mary, Queen of Scots was held as a prisoner here in the 1570s and 1580s.

Explore the walls, take a tour and meet costumed characters. There are also our giant sandpit, lavender labyrinth, crafts and giant wooden games – the perfect place for families and children to play. Just make sure you don’t get stuck in the stocks at closing time. Check out a birds eye view of the Tudor grounds.

Enjoy…. quality time together in the 1940’s cottages

Once a month Mr and Mrs Barnes open up their home for you to have a go at washing without electricity, ration book cooking and peg doll crafting. You can also meet the ARP warden who will explain exactly what to do if there is an air raid. Sound the siren, grab your gas mask and head to the Anderson shelter. If an incendiary bomb falls you can have a go at putting out using the stirrup pump.

In the exhibition room you can find out about life in Sheffield during World War 2 and how the manor estate developed in the inter war period.
