If you know about Manor Lodge you will know that the whole of our site has changed immeasurably over the years and we are keen to carry on embracing change. We are passionate about restoration, development, history and our local community and are sure you will agree that our new exciting change embodies all of that. It’s the turn of our own Rhubarb Shed Cafe to move forward to larger premises, while also managing to go back in time!

Rhubarb Shed Cafe opened it’s doors in 2009 after careful restoration of the 18th century farm buildings on site. It’s hard to believe the journey it’s been on - from tumble down farm buildings, through the hard work and care of renovation, to small farm shop, and finally to the popular and successful cafe that Tony and the team run today.

The Rhubarb team offer cosy afternoon teas, and a great selection of other meals and drinks, all served with a smile. They even offer outside catering, for all sorts of events including our wonderful individual weddings that take place at Manor Lodge.

We are thrilled that our customers keep coming back for more, and even more thrilled that, in our new lovingly restored barn venue, we can now offer everyone the same wonderful food with the added extra of double the capacity seating, a private upstairs dining room and finally our desperately longed for indoor toilets. No more trekking out into the cold![/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][fusion_builder_column type="1_2" last="no" spacing="yes" center_content="no" hide_on_mobile="no" background_color="" background_image="" background_repeat="no-repeat" background_position="left top" border_position="all" border_size="0px" border_color="" border_style="" padding="" margin_top="" margin_bottom="" animation_type="" animation_direction="" animation_speed="0.1" class="" id=""][fusion_imageframe lightbox="no" lightbox_image="" style_type="none" hover_type="none" bordercolor="" bordersize="0px" borderradius="0" stylecolor="" align="none" link="" linktarget="_self" animation_type="0" animation_direction="down" animation_speed="0.1" hide_on_mobile="no" class="" id=""] [/fusion_imageframe][/fusion_builder_column][fusion_builder_column type="1_2" last="yes" spacing="yes" center_content="no" hide_on_mobile="no" background_color="" background_image="" background_repeat="no-repeat" background_position="left top" border_position="all" border_size="0px" border_color="" border_style="" padding="" margin_top="" margin_bottom="" animation_type="" animation_direction="" animation_speed="0.1" class="" id=""][fusion_text]

But we couldn’t just have a brand new larger cafe - at Manor Lodge there is always a little something extra and Rhubarb Shed is no different. When thinking about a theme for our new home it seemed apt that the cafe, just up the farm track from our wartime cottage, should also have a 1940s theme, and we hope it won’t disappoint. There are lots of nostalgic touches and surprises inside and out.

Unfortunately the move does mean we need to close for a little while - just 22nd, 23rd and 24th April - but when the cafe opens it’s new doors on Wednesday 25th April we are sure you will agree it was worth it.

So come and pay us a visit soon and soak up some 1940s nostalgia, perhaps with a proper cup of tea and a slice of something delicious. We can’t wait to find out what you think!

Tudor Open Day - Sunday April 8th

Our Tudor open days are returning every Sunday from April 8th until October 14th – 11am until 4pm – and there’s more to do than ever before!

Our open Sundays have some great new additions to make them more family-friendly and appropriate for young adventurers. We’ve introduced new family tours of our historic grounds, including the 16th century Turret house which was home to George Talbot (the 6th Earl of Shrewsbury) and his wife, Bess of Hardwick. Mary Queens of Scots was even held prisoner here in the 1570s and 1580s!

At the Turret house, kids can travel back to the 16th century by dressing up in Tudor-style outfits and meeting Bess of Hardwick and other costumer characters. Get stuck in the stocks, lost in the lavender maze, and muck around in our giant sandpit. We even have crafts and giant wooden games so everyone can get involved. Here's what you can do:

When you have finished exploring bring a blanket for a picnic (we sell hot and cold drinks and snacks in the Discovery Centre) or wander down the hill to the Rhubarb Shed Cafe to tuck into a tasty meal enjoying the Pictorial Meadows as you go. Click here for more info.

Sunday open days cost just £3 for adults – and kids go free! And, if you want to keep coming back, you can purchase a £10 season pass which permits free entry to all of our Sunday open days, plus loads more special offers and discounts, for the whole year!
