This talk will attempt to trace the origins of Christmas and some of its associated customs. Was there a stable full of animals, who were the Magi and in what year was Jesus born? So much taken as Gospel turns out not to be. As for customs we will look at holly, ivy, robins, turkeys and crackers along with the Glastonbury Thorn, candles and stolen. Finally Patrick will sort out the confusion that has arisen over Father Christmas and Santa Claus. Informative (Patrick has written a book about Christmas) but also light-hearted – including four candles.
