We think Sheffield Manor Lodge is a fabulous place to volunteer, but don't take our word for it...

"I’ve learnt a lot, shared good times and the companionship of the other volunteers, swapped knowledge, delighted in the sunshine and endured the rain. Over the past year, with the challenges of covid my time spent gardening has offered me a real sense of wellbeing and purpose, at times it did feel to be a bit of a lifeline. It is a beautiful site and it’s fab to be able to contribute to making it lovely and knowing others will enjoy our efforts.
So what keeps me coming back? Well all of the above plus the tea and chocky biscuits provided by Jayne. What more could I ask for?"

"It keeps me going. Sitting here having talking, having a laugh and a joke. That sums it all up for me”.

Pauline is one be one of the first faces people will meet
when they visit, with more stories than could ever fit here.

"I could write a book! And when I do, I'll be sure to write it with a Tudor quill!".

"I began volunteering to gain some experience for a change of career into horticulture. It's been a great experience. The sessions are always really varied and interesting. In the autumn and winter we've been harvesting fruit, coppicing willow, pruning roses and clearing borders, alongside general maintenance tasks, like weeding and edging. We planted up some new borders in Spring and I'm looking forward to seeing the plants grow and all our hard work pay off. I've made some lovely friends since I've been coming and really look forward it each week."

"The work around the historic site and helping keep the grounds, which have been sympathetically and imaginatively planted by Green Estate, maintained is a real pleasure. Apart from the interest of the site, it’s a fabulous resource which is well used by local groups, schools and the Discovery Centre is a real asset. The historical interest extends throughout the site, even the boundary wall is fascinating. It’s a great project to be involved with. I volunteer because I want to keep active and involved, it gives me a focus in the week and I enjoy meeting people."

"I've volunteered at Sheffield Manor Lodge since 2015 but have visited many times since being a small child.

I enjoy volunteering because there's always a new skill that you can pick up or develop throughout the season. Whether that be different crafts or foraging with visitors when it's fruit picking season."
